Active Flag
The Active School Flag is a Department of Education and Skills initiative supported by Healthy Ireland. The Active School Flag is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community. The process aims to get more schools, more active, more often. Our challenge will be to find interesting and exciting ways to energize the school day because active children are happy learners and our pupils certainly are active and happy!!
Have a look below at all of the things we have been doing to achieve our Active Flag!
Active Flag Slogan
‘Exercise each day and go the healthy way’
At the beginning of our ASF journey the committee decided to run a poster competition to find our school slogan. There were so many great posters and slogans to choose from with the committee deciding on this one submitted by Jack N. as it captures the spirit of our active and healthy school.
Partnerships
Here in Scoil San Eoin, we always encourage local sporting organisations to visit our school and provide coaching sessons, talks, displays and tasters. The children always enjoy their annual coaching sessions with local GAA and Rugby clubs. Over the past few years we have enjoyed a wide variety of activities in the school such as dance, gymnastics, yoga, tennis, skipping and cycling. Some examples of our community partnerships can be found at the bottom of the page.
Physically Active
We are very lucky in Scoil San Eoin to have an extensive outside space which naturally encourages the children to be physically active. The children are provided with a range of pe equipment at break times and can be found skipping, playing football or basketball with whole school hide and seek games common place to! Take a look below at our photographs to see how we also encorporate physical activity into our school day and our school fundraisers!
Physical Education
All strands of the primary school physical education curriculum are provided for in Scoil San Eoin in accordance with our whole school pe plan. All pupils are provided with 60 minutes of timetabled pe each week where at least five different strands of the pe curriculum are taught every year. Our whole school pe plan operates on a two year cycle with aquatics undertaken every second year in our local swimming pool and the Land PAWS programme taught every year in the third in the final term. The whole school pe plan encompasses a detailed focus on each strand of the curriculum along with the development in the children of fundamental movement skills.
Active School Week
Scoil San Eoin held their very first Active School Week in 2018 with it becoming an annual event ever since. The children enjoy a wide variety of activities from the early morning ‘Wake Up Shake Up’, active breaks in the classroom such as Drop Everything and Dance to visiting coaches and whole school fun events, e.g. The SSE 10KM in a day challenge! Homework during this week also incorporates plenty of active challenges which coincides with our use of the Super Troopers programme at this time of the school year.
