The children in the Junior Room have been working really hard in November and have covered lots of work.
We started off November with science week where the children completed several experiments like exploring loud and soft sounds by making shakers, looking at sound waves and how sound travels in our jumping rice experiment and just for fun we made cloud dough which smelled divine.
Several hands on topics were covered in Maths this month. The Junior and Senior Infants explored long/short, wide/narrow, tall/small etc. and had great fun with links particularly when making a long chain which stretched into the corridor. Shapes both 2D and 3D were explored by all classes which lended nicely to robots and rockets in artwork. The children in First and Second also worked on symmetry which was an enjoyable break from other maths work.
The children are really progressing in Gaeilge and spent the month of November learning all about Bia. They are now experts in how to make pancakes both in English and Irish. Games and interactive activities on the whiteboard in class are very popular, if at times competitive, with the children.
In English we read lots of nice stories including The Tiger Who Came To Tea and Tom’s Shoes. First and Second class wrote and typed their very own recounts, adding pictures and working on changing fonts, colours etc.
During the month of November we studied Sound in depth in SESE. While learning about Alexander Graham Bell the children discovered an interesting fact that he also invented the metal detector. The children tried their best to find some treasure around the school grounds with a metal detector…..no success yet.
Throughout the month the children stayed active either completing go noodle daily or a run a day on our active walkway. Thankfully we have had very few wet days but on those lego has been the go to activity. As the month drew to a close the excitement was building for the Late Late Toy Show, Christmas decorating and opening Advent calendars. We are all looking forward to making the most of the lead up to Christmas in school and enjoying the infectious excitement of the children.
