Talking about BUGS!!!

We were very fortunate to be visited by Gillian and Ian from the Education Centre, Wicklow Wildlife and National Park,  Glendalough. They spoke to the pupils about bugs and even brought in some samples. The pupils were fascinated and learned alot about the various species of bugs and insects around us, how to classify them and some very interesting (and sometimes nasty!) facts about them. Thanks Gillian and Ian!

Water Wizardry Science Experiement

The Senior Class pupils got hands on with science this month. We looked at a variety of materials and whether they would dissolve or not. We experimented with liquids which do not mix and discussed the three forms of matter and the idea of density.

3rd and 4th class worked together to make a huge Friendship Week jigsaw. They should great teamwork and cooperation and had it made in fantastic time. Well done!!

Friendship Week

Next week is International Friendship Week.  This year's theme is Belonging: finding a place for everyone in our world.  The children will take part in activities exploring their own belonging in their family and community, building empathy with those who are struggling to find a place.  This will encourage skills of welcoming and standing up for those who need our support in our schools and global community.  We are encouraging all pupils to make a €2.00 donation towards Amnesty International and in turn they will receive a Friendship Bracelet.

10@10

In conjunction with RTE's Operation Transformation programme, thousands of school children across the country took part in 10 minutes of exercise at 10.00am this morning. The children were led  by video through a series of exercises, each with 10 repeats! All the children had great fun and realised how easy it is to do simple and fun exercises without much space or equipment. Well done!

Story Telling

Rosemary Hetherington has kindly volunteered to read stories to the Junior classes.  Rosemary will be in school each Friday morning passing on her love of books to the children.  She has recently retired from the Library Service and has a wealth of experience in all aspects of literature.

World Book Day

To coincide with World Book Day, (March 2nd) children are invited to dress up as their favourite book character. We would encourage children to make a small donation of  €2.00 in aid of Book Aid International to help send thousands of books to children who need them in sub-Saharan Africa.  The children of Scoil San Eoin will receive a €1.50 book token which can be used in all book shops.  The staff are looking forward to seeing pupils imagination and creativity come to life in the form of interesting book characters.

Dragons Den in Scoil San Eoin!!

A Scoil San Eoin version of Dragons Den was held in the Senior Class today. Ciaran Coughlan and Bernard Brennan, two local entrepreneurs and business people, were invited into the school to join Ms Greene in being a 'dragon' . It was very interesting and exciting for both the teams of pupils and the 'dragons'. A huge thank you to Bernard and Ciaran for their time and input.

Six teams of pupils had to come into the 'den' and present their ideas for the Junior Entrepreneur Programme.  Each member of the team had an idea and they had to pitch their idea to the 'dragons' using PowerPoint presentations, posters, samples of ideas etc. They had to include information such as the costings, potential profit, materials they would use, how and where it would be produced/assembled, how it would be packaged and marketed and options for places it could be sold. The pupils were asked questions by the 'dragons' about their product during the presentation.

Each team did and amazing job and the 'dragons' were blown away with the pupils creativity, business sense and presentation skills. Well done all!!

Stay tuned to see which idea was chosen as the final BIG IDEA!!

Wicklow Mountains National Park Outreach Programme

On Friday the 3rd of February, Scoil San Eoin had the pleasure of listening to Gillian and David from the National Park. This theme was "Bugs". The children got to see lovely pictures of spiders, butterflies etc and learn interesting facts about them. Also, there was stuffed animals for the children to pet and feel such as; Hedgehog, Badger and a Rabbit. Many Thanks to our guest speakers for such a lovely experience.

Clouds

All the children in the Junior Room have been learning about Clouds for the month of January. This theme was linked in with "An Aimsir". RI & RII got an opportunity to record clouds daily in the morning for a week and predict what weather we would experience in the afternoon. This geography outdoor trail was enjoyed by all. They had a Cloud finder to assist in naming the different clouds and a description of what a cloud should look like.

Junior Entrepreneur Programme gets started!!

The Junior Entrepreneur Programme is well underway in the Senior classroom. The pupils looked at what entrepreneurship is all about. They researched national and international entrepreneurs, the companies they set up and what services/products they provide. For the second stage the class has begun to look at the traits and characteristics of an entrepreneur and their own talents and characteristics, especially those which they can bring to a team and this JEP process. They had to come up with two about themselves and then one about each member of their team. A very positive experience! They began exploring ideas within their assigned groups and are now whittling down their ideas to one per group which they will present to the Dragons on Thursday the 9th!! Exciting stuff!!
